  • “The Circle Game”, Joni Mitchell
  • “The Swimmer’s Moment”, Margaret Avison
  • “The Necessity for Irony”, Eavan Boland
  • “There Will Be No Peace”, W.H. Auden
  • “The Spirits Have Begun Working”, Gregory A. Scofield

You will then focus your response on two of them in the next assignment, a Critical Analytical Comparison Essay.

a)  Identify the type or style of the poem

b)  Identify at least 4 of the most significant of the following literary techniques, and give at least one specific quoted example for each. Explore the significance/meaning – -why is each important to the meaning of the poem?                                                   

● Specific diction choices – -how do specific verbs / concrete nouns have an impact?

● Specific examples of  Figurative Language (S,  M,  P,  H +other)  –how do these create effect?

● Specific examples of other literary devices:  Irony, allusion, paradox, etc  –why/how are these significant?

● Are colloquial expressions, archaic language,  unconventional usage, formal vs informal language present?  Why are they used?

● Do specific objects, gestures, places, persons, images, colours, etc. have symbolic meaning?  How so?

● Do line lengths / enjambment, stanzas, refrains, punctuation, spacing, indentation influence the reading?  If so, how?

● Do devices of sound have an effect?  [rhythm, rhyme, assonance, dissonance, onomatopoeia, alliteration, +other]  If so, how?

Consider: Who is in the poem: various characters, only a persona (speaker), or both persona and characters?  What are the important perceptions, observations, attitudes, or judgements associated with the persona?  From which point of view is the poem presented: first person, omniscient, limited omniscient, objective?  How is the persona involved in the events, ideas, sensations, or feelings developed in the poem?  How does the title relate?

Consider:  What is the central idea [theme] of the poem?  Which of the topic questions above best fits this theme?

Respond:   Write a well-developed 1-paragraph mini-essay [topic sentence/developmental ideas/conclusion sentence] in which you explore the key theme of the poem, relative to your chosen topic question and the title.  Quote at least 3 of the most relevant and powerful details to support and reinforce your points, and elaborate on your ideas.
